The Espace de l’Art Concret was inaugurated in 1990. It exists thanks to the commitment and determination of several people : two experienced collectors, Sybil Albers and Gottfried Honegger, and the mayor of Mouans-Sartoux, André Aschieri, who embraced and defended this artistic and cultural mission to impart the skill of seeing. Because Sybil Albers and Gottfried Honegger wanted to make their collection accessible to the public, they deposited them with the Town of Mouans-Sartoux. This led to the creation of the Espace de I’Art Concret even before the collection was donated to the State.
Gottfried Honegger has always been deeply involved in artistic life at the art centre; the Espace de l’Art Concret has afforded pride of place to pedagogy since the outset and is proving to be a benchmark establishment in this field. In 2000, Sybil Albers and Gottfried Honegger took the decision to donate their collections to the State on condition that they are displayed in a specially constructed building in the grounds of the Chateau de Mouans and that the project’s strong scientific coherence around concrete art is guaranteed.
