Ein Doll im maltesischen Dialog
Tatjana Doll, geboren 1970 in Burgsteinfurt, erhielt 2016 den Hannah-Höch-Förderpreis für den Bereich Malerei. Ihre Ausstellung „Neuer Weltatlas“ ist noch bis zum April in der Berlinischen Galerie zu sehen.
Bei unseren Wanderungen in Valletta und Umgebung musste ich bei einer Skulptur in Vittoriosa (leider kenne ich den Künstler nicht) an DUMMY_Akku Akku (Green) denken.
Seit kurzem ist Lenins Granit-Kopf in Spandau zu sehen. Auch andernorts ist der Revolutionär präsent.

Mein Spaziergang beginnt an der Schwimmhalle Baumschulenweg. Der leere Sockel ist nur noch eine Erinnerung an den Jungen Sportler von Fritz Ritter. Der Diebstahl der Skulptur ist schon ewig her. Das war 2010, oder? Ich habe nicht gehört, dass der Fall jemals aufgeklärt wurde.
An der Schwimmhalle befindet sich ein Relief Badende von Berndt Wilde, zum Glück aus Marmor und nicht aus Bronze.

This monument is dedicated to sailors from Senglea and their families. The sculpture is a symbol of the suffering a sailor‘ s family experiences when it sustains separation.
The artist, Cari Privitera (b. 1971), decided to use lava from Mount Etna as a raw material, which represents resistance to suffering, since lava is the strongest stone found in nature and is resistant to the elements. This raw material is compared to the family which, despite suffering and bearing physical separation, remains firm and united. The mother and the son are seen hugging the father before he sets sail and seek his protection, the three united as one. Beneath them the powerful waves curl. The faces in this sculpture are a universal symbol of mankind.
The lava block, which was formed by an eruption on Mount Etna around 1700, was cut from a quarry in Paterno, close to Catania in Sicily, and weighed 20 tonnes. The artist used a special tool, the helicoidial diamond, to carve this monument, which weighs 9.5 tonnes and whose dimensions are 1.5 m x 2.30 m.
This was the main Protestant cemetery in Malta for about fifty years from 1806. Records show that at least 528 people were buried here and it was more or less full in 1856 when Ta’ Braxia Cemetery was opened. The principal occupants are British servicemen, officials and businessmen and their families, some of whose descendants still live in Malta today, as well as some Maltese.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge ist mir auch schon in Berlin begegnet.
In 1804 Samuel Taylor Coleridge traveled to Malta, hoping the more temperate climate would aid his poor health and end his addiction to opium. During his time there, Alexander Ball, the Governor of Malta, encouraged the poet to write propaganda about British trade routes, and eventually Coleridge was promoted to the position of Public Secretary. Below (here: This Day in Lettres), he writes to his wife Sara, noting his first impressions of the place in which he would spend his next two years.
The whole island looks like one monstrous fortification. Nothing green meets your eye—one dreary, grey-white,— and all the country towns from the retirement and invisibility of the windows look like towns burnt out and desolate.
The fortifications of Valetta are endless. When I first walked about them, I was struck all of a heap with their strangeness, and when I came to understand a little of their purpose, I was overwhelmed with wonder.
Auf beinahe 3000 Papierbögen, Zetteln und Karteikarten hat Ulrike Damm ihre Roman-Trilogie übertragen. Drei Romane – drei Schriftkunstwerke, vereint in einer Installation. Der Bleistift hat die Romane neu geschrieben und die Kämpfe ihrer Charaktere ins Sprachbild gebracht.
